Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

After, touring the San Juans in Colorado for a couple weeks I returned to Denver to work and play in the city.  I ended up working event production for Red Bull North America for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Race on 14'er, Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs, Colorado, June 30, 2013.  The PPIHC, is the nations second oldest running auto-race after the Indy 500, and is one of the oldest auto-races in the world.  Race cars and motorcycles of various classes, professional and amateur, race to the summit of Pikes Peak and compete for time on the 12.42 mile course with 156 turns that begins at 9,390 feet and finishes at the 14,110 foot summit.

Red Bull racer, Sebastien Loeb placed 1st and destroyed the standing record by one minute summiting Pikes Peak in 8:13.878 in his Red Bull sponsored Peugot. Red Bull Racer Rhys Millen, placed 2nd at 9:02.192 while also beating the standing record by 10 seconds.  The two racers flew by me up hill about a 1/3 way up the track.  I have been to NASCAR and drag races, but had never experienced being so close to race-cars moving that fast.  It was quite the experience watching them make tight turns while moving uphill on Pikes Peak.  I had been to Pikes Peak as a kid and drove up the summit several times over the years growing up, but had never been to the race.

Besides the super cars, I enjoyed the electric auto and motorcycle class. For a bike or car to be able to travel up to 100mph uphill on an electric motor is amazing to me. There were several of the electric bikes entered in the race and I hope that the class and technology continue to grow and spread further into the consumer market.  Saving fossil fuels while reducing CO2 emissions needs to be pursued and starting at the top with professional racecars and motorcycles is how automobile technology has and always will be researched and produced.

I believe the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb to be one of the most challenging auto-races in the world and to be one of the coolest and most exciting to see as a spectator.  Every auto-racing enthusiast and persons that want a new spectator sport experience, should go to the PPIHC.
